Throughout history, men and women have asked the same questions in relation to human suffering. If someone we love is seriously injured in an accident, we ask, 'Why do dreadful things happen to good people?' If we are going through a dark and difficult time, we ask, 'Where is God when I need Him?' When we see thousands of people dying because of war or famine, we ask, 'If God is powerful, why does he not stop such tragedies occurring?' Graeme and Julia Cann do not presume to have the answers to these questions but seek to help their readers create a space where they can escape the hopelessness and powerlessness that often descends upon sufferers and their carers. They do this by speaking out of over 60 years of ministry experience, where they have pastored and counselled thousands of people, as they have confronted times of darkness. Neither of them has been without their own midnights, and their own experiences enrich their narrative. They weave together the experiences and words of biblical figures such as David and Job and the stories of six people who, between them have experienced physical, mental, and psychological pain. Each of them has not only survived but continue serving God and people faithfully today. Recognising that in this world it is not a question of if but when we suffer, Graeme and Julia write out of a firm belief that God is sovereign and that he can be trusted completely, even in the midnights of our lives.
