In late November 1899, in Tishomingo, Indian Territory, 17-year-old Eva Baker is caught between two worlds: the future she's always dreamed of and the family obligations threaten to shape her destiny-a destiny she never wanted. Eva has spent her life in Tishomingo, helping with the family and their small farm. She has graduated from Bloomfield Academy with high honors. Now, she wants to learn the art of midwifery under the tutelage of Aurora Harrison, a local and admired midwife. But when her father decides to uproot the family and move to Galveston, Texas, he insists that Eva come with them. Torn between loyalty to her family and the pull of her aspirations, Eva decides to stay behind in Tishomingo, where her grandmother agrees to support her for a year-or perhaps longer. Eva has to choose whether to stay in Tishomingo in order to become a midwife or go to Texas as her father wants her to do. Finally, her father agrees to let Eva stay in Tishomingo under his mother's watchful eye and Eva's grandmother, Dottie Baker. As Eva steps into her role as an apprentice midwife, she finds herself facing even more challenging decisions. Her childhood friend, Joe, has proposed marriage, but Eva doesn't love him. Additionally, she worries about her ability to handle the immense responsibility of bringing life into the world-especially if it means losing a child under her care. When a young Scottish doctor arrives in town, Eva feels an unexpected spark between them. However, her growing feelings for him complicate everything. She is no longer the young girl she once was. Love, like childbirth, is a leap of faith.
