"Write, just write." This was God's calling to Sylvia Aftonomos at age 90 and where her story of God's provision throughout her life in unexpected ways and against what seemed like overwhelming odds begins. Born in 1924 on the beautiful island of Cyprus -- where she spent her first 32 years and was a devout member of the Greek Orthodox Church -- she moved to stark, mid-winter Lincoln, Nebraska with her husband and two children (a third on the way) in 1957. With scant English, and far from the lush gardens of her island home and beloved Greek Orthodox church just down the street, she was overwhelmed. A well-educated teacher in Cyprus, she didn't even know the language of her new country. This is her story of how God provided victory beyond her expectations. He led her to a Billy Graham crusade, a Baptist church in her neighborhood for Bible study (being Greek Orthodox, Protestant churches had seemed impossible!!), the realization at age 50 -- against all advice -- of her childhood dream of becoming a nurse, an award-winning 25-year nursing career which included writing many published articles and poems, and, after retirement at age 75, several other ministries. At journey's end, she has returned to the Greek Orthodox Church, "where I belong and where the first seeds of faith in Christ had been planted in me."
